This month we celebrate the stories of women who have played leading roles in the history of Florida State Parks. Their accomplishments vary from helping preserve land to building formal gardens.

Throughout Florida’s history, Black communities have made enormous contributions to our economy and culture.

From our Spanish origins to the modern day, Black Floridians have had a huge influence on our state's culture and history. Whether they were fighting on battlefields or in courtrooms, building roads through parks or bridges between communities, we want to highlight a few of the many Black Floridians who have left their mark on Florida State Parks.

Starting with Falling Waters State Park at our first planned and documented prescribed fire, our statewide prescribed fire program has grown to include state parks across Florida. We manage approximately 290,000 acres of fire-type habitat, and we only keep improving. 

Whether high up in the trees or deep in underground burrows, animals across Florida live in habitats that are adapted to fire. These seven Florida species depend on prescribed fire for their survival.

Volunteers contribute more than a million hours per year to the success of Florida State Parks. Are you interested in becoming a campground host or resident volunteer? Responsibilities include greeting campers, answering questions and maintaining the campground in exchange for free a campsite.

Bill Baggs Cape Florida State Park is known for its beautiful beaches and scenic views of the Atlantic Ocean beneath the park’s trademark lighthouse. The park regularly hosts beach cleanups, relying on the dedication of hundreds of volunteers each month.

In November 2020, two Florida Conservation Corps teams deployed to Pensacola to help with hurricane recovery.
