Experiences
The eastern end of the Cross Florida Greenway is located along the Cross Florida Barge Canal near its connection to the St. Johns River. Aquatic avian species are commonly seen along the canal and adjacent to Buckman Lock.
Upland species such as wild turkey, red-shouldered hawks, and a variety of wrens and sparrows are often seen in this area.
There are 12 sites for primitive equestrian camping available at the St. Johns Loop South located at the south side of Buckman Lock off Rodeheaver Boys Ranch Road.
There is access to more than 7 miles of multi-use natural surface trails between this area, the St. Johns River floodplain and west to Rodman Campground. High tie posts are located at each site for campers to secure horses.
These sites are available on a first-come, first-served basis.
Both the St. Johns Loop North and South provide access to several miles of natural surface trails on the north and south sides of the Buckman Lock.
The Florida National Scenic Trail main orange blaze through trail runs through both areas across the miter gates of the Buckman Lock. From the lock the FNST goes 5.1 miles west to the Rodman Campground. North of the Buckman Lock, the FNST follows Buckman Lock Road for 1 mile until it crosses over State Road 19 onto private lands as it heads toward Rice Creek.
There are also several miles of natural surface multi-use trails in the pine flatwoods in the St. Johns Loop North adjacent to the fenced pond area.
Equestrians enjoy access to more than 7 miles of multi-use natural surface trails between the St. Johns Loop South, the St. Johns River floodplain and westward to Rodman Campground.

- Helmets are recommended for all cyclists on our trails. Florida law requires helmets for cyclists age 16 and under.

There are many species of wildlife common to Florida that can be seen at the St. Johns Loop North and South. Whitetail deer, wild turkey, bobcat and fox along with many species of birds and reptiles are regulars.
American alligators can usually be seen along with manatees along the canal shoreline areas, particularly during the warmer months.
Amenities
Pets are welcome at Buckman Lock-St. Johns Loop North and South. All pets must be on a hand-held, 6-foot leash at all times. Pets may not be left unattended.
- Pet owners must pick up after their pets and properly dispose of all pet droppings in trash receptacles.
