Birding at Perdido Key
Many different species of herons, plovers and gulls can be seen on any given day at the park. Seasonally, several wintering birds may be spotted at Perdido Key including black skimmers, loons, gannets and mergansers.
During the spring and summer months, park visitors may encounter restricted areas of both beach and sand dunes, roped off with signage. These areas are protected to provide important nesting habitat for species such as the least tern and many species of plovers. Park staff asks that visitors please respect these restrictions to help give young birds the best chance for survival.
If you are new to birding, or would like to give it a try, nearby Big Lagoon State Park in partnership with the Great Florida Birding Trail and the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission offers a loaner optic program. This program provides visitors with binoculars and spotting scopes for birdwatching. The park also has a limited supply of loaner bird identification books. These supplies may be borrowed during regular business hours of 8 a.m. – sunset, and they may be utilized at Perdido Key State Park.
