Safety Updates

Florida State Parks will follow local orders requiring facial coverings or masks to provide for staff and visitor safety. These requirements vary from area to area. Our main priority is the safety of our guests and staff. We will continue to review operations on a daily basis and make additional operational changes as may be deemed necessary for protection of public health. Please review individual park pages for specific information for each location.

Beach Ecosystem

The beautiful white sugary sand at Perdido Key State Park is comprised of finely ground quartz, washed down from the Appalachians 25 million years ago. Today, beach-goers enjoy the beautiful sand, sun and water but the beach is much more than that.

Sea turtles at Perdido Key

Loggerhead sea turtles begin showing up at Perdido Key in late March or early May on into August where the females lay their eggs in nests along the beach. Although less frequent the green turtle, and the Kemp’s Ridley, the hawksbill have also been recorded laying nests.

Perdido Key Beach Mouse

The role of the Perdido Key Beach Mouse is often overlooked when people think of the habitat. One critical behavior the mice have is to forage for seeds and then store them underground. Most importantly for the coastal dune ecosystem are the sea oat seeds.
