Melody Bamburg grew up with a love for the Florida Panhandle, and St. George Island in particular. She has enjoyed family camping on the island since the 1970s, when her father taught her about the diverse and ever-changing Gulf of Mexico, the seashore and Apalachicola Bay. Her father served in the Florida Marine Patrol and was passionate about teaching the dos and don’ts of protecting our natural and cultural resources.

Melody has worked at St. George Island State Park since 1987. She enjoys teaching others how to identify and protect our natural and cultural communities. Her favorites are nesting sea turtles and shorebirds. Melody is the park’s nesting sea turtle coordinator. Her duties include conducting daily sea turtle surveys and training volunteers and other staff members so they can help.

Melody also helps manage natural resources by serving on the a prescribed fire burn team with other staff members around the area. She recently received training on aerial ignition, which meant riding in a helicopter.

Melody is also the park’s volunteer coordinator. She says the best part is the opportunity to meet so many people from all over the world and learning about their lives and passions.
