The Palatka-to-Lake Butler State Trail has 4 miles of paved asphalt for bicycling starting at the Lake Butler Trailhead (Union County) and 19 miles of paved asphalt starting at the Twin Lakes Park trailhead (Clay County).  

A 6-mile connector trail starts at the intersection of the Palatka-to-Lake Butler State Trail and State Road 21. This trail connects Mike Roess Gold Head Branch State Park with the Palatka-to-Lake Butler State Trail.

Safety Information

  • Helmets are recommended for all cyclists. Florida law requires helmets for cyclists age 16 and younger.
  • Bring water, sunscreen and bug spray.
  • Obey all traffic laws.
  • When bicycling on a trail or dirt road shared with hikers or equestrians, be respectful of others. Learn more about our state park rules and trail etiquette.
  • Bicycles, including electric bicycles, may be used on trails designated for bicycle use with the park system, consistent with Section 316.20655, F.S.
  • All bicycles should operate in a safe manner.
  • Please obey all posted speed limits.
  • Please be aware that cross traffic does not stop. It is the responsibility of the trail user to stop at all street intersections.

The trail has approximately 4 miles of paved asphalt for inline skating starting at the Lake Butler Trailhead, and approximately 19 miles of paved asphalt starting at the Twin Lakes Park trailhead.

Palatka-to-Lake Butler State Trail is committed to providing a variety of amenities accessible to all of our visitors. These amenities include:

  • The Palatka-to-Lake Butler State Trail has 4 miles of paved asphalt starting at the Lake Butler Trailhead (Union County) and 28 miles of paved asphalt starting at State Road 100, 2 miles west of Keystone in Bradford County. 
  • A 6-mile connector trail starts at the intersection of the Palatka-to-Lake Butler State Trail and State Road 21.

Service animals are welcome in all areas of Florida State Parks.

Parking is available at the Twin Lakes Park trailhead and the Lake Butler trailhead. Limited parking is available on Forest Hills road near Putnam Hall. The parking area on Forest Hills road has no facilities.

  • Lake Butler Trailhead: 525 S.W. First St. / Lake Butler, FL 32054-2016 / GPS Coordinates: N 30.0120 / W -82.2026.
  • Putnam Hall parking (limited parking, four spaces): Forest Hills Road and State Road 100 / Melrose, FL 32666 / GPS Coordinates: N 29.74179 / W -81.971161.
Pets
Pets

Dog walking is a very popular activity on the Palatka-to-Lake Butler State Trail. All well-behaved domestic pets are welcome on the trail. They must be kept on a handheld leash that is six feet or shorter. Pet owners are required to pick up after their pets and properly dispose of their droppings.

  • Pets are not permitted inside any buildings or on the playground.

There is a playground facility at the Twin Lakes Park trailhead (Clay County). There is no playground at the Lake Butler trailhead (Union County), but there is some outdoor exercise equipment.

Restroom Facilities
Restroom Facilities

Restroom facilities are available at the Lake Butler trailhead (city of Lake Butler) at the restored railroad depot. They are also available at the Twin Lakes Park trailhead (Clay County).

  • There are no other locations with these facilities on the trail.
