History

Hikers enjoy the nature trails which include a portion of the 1,400-mile, congressionally designated Florida National Scenic Trail Home to the Florida Horse Park and many miles of loop trails, the greenway offers an extraordinary opportunity to explore diverse aspects of Florida's wild beauty on horseback. Additional horseback riding opportunities can be found on the nearby lands of the Southwest Water Management District at the Hálpata-Tastanaki Preserve, located approximately four miles east of Dunnellon on the south side of CR 484.

The preserve offers several miles of multi-use, recreational trails and the Pruitt Trailhead which provides non-potable water for horses and an equestrian staging area.

The Ocklawaha and Withlacoochee Rivers, traversing opposite ends of the greenway, supply miles of scenic paddling trails. Mountain bike enthusiasts can access more than 80 miles of internationally acclaimed and award winning off-road bike trails from the Santos Trailhead near Ocala.

Fishing is a popular activity at both ends of the Greenway, from near Palatka where the Rodman Recreation Area offers places to camp, fish, watch wildlife and picnic, as well as the western end near Inglis, which includes Lake Rousseau and the 5-mile, paved Withlacoochee Bay Trail that extends to the Gulf of America.

The western end of the Greenway is featured in the Citrus County segment of the Great Florida Birding and Wildlife Trail.
