Staff Spotlight, Robert Hammel

Robert Hammel

Robert Hammel, Park Ranger

Rising from volunteer to Park Ranger, Robert continuously demonstrates service over self through his extraordinary work ethic, attention to detail, and commitment to providing visitors an exceptional experience. Robert uses work time effectively and is a role model to others for taking pride in a job well done. His work is often done when others are not looking, including cobwebbing, cleaning gutters, pressure washing, mowing and trimming trails. He holds himself to a high standard, wearing his uniform perfectly and proudly, and is accountable, honest and loyal. Robert interacts with visitors, improving their experience through informal interpretation with a passion for sharing the stories of our animal ambassadors, especially of the bears and pelicans. He is an excellent trainer to new employees, imparting his extensive knowledge of every aspect of the park along with his high standards of visitor services, maintenance operations and animal care.

The park managers rely on him as a go-to employee to come in on his days off to handle emergencies or cover for coworkers in times of need. This past year Robert has taken on the role as the park's safety coordinator. He has improved the efficiency of reports regarding maintenance on vehicles and equipment, prepares for and participates in the annual fire marshal inspection, and ensures that staff have correct PPE and safety equipment available to do their jobs safely.

In the words of Assistant Park Manager Marla Chancey, "Everybody needs a Ranger Robert in their park. He makes the park a better place, ensuring exceptional visitor experiences and staff safety. His confidence and charisma are contagious."
