The mission of the Florida Park Service is "to provide resource-based recreation while preserving, interpreting, and restoring natural and cultural resources." What role do you play in this mission?

As the administrative assistant for the Tomoka Basin State Parks, I assist the park manager in ensuring that all resources, both financial and physical, are acquired, documented and properly maintained within our budgetary constraints. I am involved daily with the budgeting, contracting, purchasing, accounting and personnel record management duties to support our mission.

How does your heritage influence your experience in the outdoors?

I did not grow up going to parks, camping, kayaking, canoeing, etc., in New York or Puerto Rico. But since the day I started to work at Tomoka State Park, I have learned so much about environmental resource management. Learning about historical sites such as Bulow Plantation Ruins and Addison Block House state parks, I now have a thirst to learn more about all the historic sites in Florida. I find myself promoting the state parks to friends and family all the time.

The Tomoka Basin State Parks are not only parks to enjoy for recreation, but they are also a place to learn about Florida history and to see the native animals that we protect.

Any advice for Latinx who are interested in a career in conservation or recreation?

The opportunity to work at the Tomoka Basin State Parks has been an extremely rewarding experience. Exploring the diverse parks and seeing wildlife makes me feel like I am in ...the Real Florida. I encourage Latinx people to come and experience what working for the Florida State Parks is all about. You won't regret working in a state park.

Whether you work in an office or the field, you will develop a passion and motivation to preserve the natural and cultural resources of our state parks.
