People have been navigating and recreating on the Suwannee River since prehistoric times. During the mid to late 1800s, steamboat traffic was common along the Suwannee as a source of supplies and sales for farmers.
The creation of the Suwannee River Wilderness Trail has brought together many public and private entities to create a cooperative structure of amenities making the exploration and enjoyment of the Suwannee River a comfortable experience for paddlers of all skill levels. Planning for the trail began in 2003 with the first of five river camps, Woods Ferry, completed in 2005.
The trail continued to gain popularity and growth until the final camp, Dowling Park was completed in 2010.
