Volunteer Spotlight, Tom & Lynn Maize

Volunteers Tom and Lynn Maize before their Crabbing Basics program

Tom & Lynn Maize

Gamble Rogers Memorial State Recreation Area At Flagler Beach

Tom and Lynn Maize spent their summers along the Jersey Shore while growing up and have always loved the ocean. In 2009, they moved to Ormond Beach.

They love the salt life and all it has to offer, especially fishing from their flats boat and the beaches of Gamble Rogers and North Peninsula. Protecting the beaches and salt marshes is a high priority. On weekends, they wage battle against invasive exotic plants in our two parks.

Tom, a retired land surveyor, still loves being outdoors and keeping his survey skills sharp. Lynn likes that volunteering gives them special moments with wildlife they otherwise would not experience.

Interpretation and resource management are the passions of this local volunteer team. Park activities include the crabbing and gopher tortoise programs, oyster shell bagging, beach cleanup, historical research and tackling projects, especially ones that benefit from GPS and mapping skills. It's all fun.
