Art Campbell, Volunteer

Devil's Millhopper Geological State Park

A lifelong Floridian, Art Campbell was born and raised in Gainesville. Now going on 75 years of age, he’s always loved spending time outdoors. Hiking in the parks, getting out on the water and playing a round of golf are all ways Art loves to spend his time outside. He loves to find beauty in nature, and, lucky for us, Devil’s Millhopper has plenty to go around.

Art’s favorite part of volunteering at the park is interacting with visitors. He loves sharing both the natural beauty and the unique archaeology of the sinkhole with others. His favorite time of the year at the park is winter: As leaves fall off the trees, you can see farther into the sinkhole from its rim, giving even more gorgeous views of this geological wonder.

Art’s ties to the park run deep – even before it was officially a state park! He may not admit it, but Art was once one of the many University of Florida students who came to the sinkhole before it became a state park. If you’re looking to learn about the history of this special place, there’s nobody better to ask than Art!

Art hopes that you’ll visit Devil’s Millhopper. You might even catch him wandering the park’s nature trail – if he’s not out golfing, that is.
