Wildlife & Fishing at Econfina River
Hikers, cyclists and equestrians have opportunities to enjoy a network of multiuse trails that explore miles of shady woodlands winding through forested areas and skirting the margins of salt marshes. These trails offer some remarkable views, and whether visiting the park by water or by land, you may sight bobcats, Florida black bears, alligators and numerous bird species.
The river area also supports several imperiled species such as gopher tortoises, blue heron, tricolored heron, wood stork and southeastern American kestrels. In addition, wild hogs, deer, turkeys, squirrels, turtles and river otters can be seen in the park.
Birders can commonly spot swallow-tailed kites (spring and summer), blue herons, egrets and assorted wading birds.
The river is also an angler's dream. Econfina River State Park provides two excellent, universally accessible boat launches for those pursuing saltwater fish species found along the shallow coastline. The primary species you’ll find are redfish (red drum), spotted seatrout or gulf flounder. The park entrance fee also covers boat, canoe or kayak launch, so there is no separate charge.
