Volunteer Spotlight, Brian York

Brian York

Brian says that volunteering for Florida State Parks is an amazing and awesome experience.

Growing up in Kansas, Brian always found himself outside exploring the woods and going fishing with his dad. After serving 22 years in the US Air Force, Brian and his wife Stephanie moved to Florida to be closer to family.

Brian immediately immersed himself in his new environment, becoming a volunteer with the Amelia Island Sea Turtle Patrol, walking the beach and hiking the trails in northern Florida. Eventually moving to the Flagler Beach area, Brian found more opportunity to give back to his community and local state parks, Gamble Rogers Memorial State Recreation Area and North Peninsula State Park.

Brian’s volunteer activities include leading guided kayak tours, trail and grounds maintenance, Shuck and Share oyster recycling program, firewood delivery to campground hosts, assisting at events and serving as a board member with the Friends of Gamble Rogers Citizen Support Organization.

Brian encourages others to volunteer so they too can experience the same joy he feels from accomplishing projects, meeting new people, and most importantly enjoying Florida State Parks.

Brian says “It’s an amazing and awesome life experience.”
