Staff Spotlight, Laura Kwaak
A Florida native, Laura has spent her life immersed in the beauty of the Sunshine State. From its golden hour coastlines to the hidden springs and quiet lakes that lie in between, her connection to natural Florida runs deep. An avid tent camper and explorer, Laura joined the park service in 2023. Despite facing a season marked by hurricanes, she quickly fell in love with the work and became a full-time Park Ranger in 2024.
Laura’s love for Florida’s diverse ecosystems, especially its many forms of water, makes her role as a Ranger a natural and fulfilling fit. She believes strongly in being a voice for the land, water and wildlife, ensuring their safety and longevity for future generations.
As a passionate mushroom cultivator, Laura delights in the surprises that emerge from the mycelium web beneath our feet. She shares her extensive knowledge of mushrooms, flora and fauna through educational and interpretive programs. Her specialties include camping safety and the importance of journaling and logging experiences in the great outdoors.
“Nature is always speaking to us; we only need to listen.”
Laura considers interpretation moments with visitors essential not only to education but also to shared growth. She believes that these interactions help deepen everyone’s appreciation of Florida’s ecological treasures, especially the springs cave system, and remind us how deeply interconnected we are with the environment.
Teamwork and mentorship have played a vital role in the success of many park projects. Looking toward the future, Laura remains excited by the possibilities of continued conservation and taking care of the parks for many future visitors to enjoy.
“It is a responsibility I hold in my heart, being part of a team that protects and preserves these places we call home.”
