Staff Spotlight, Don Smith

Don Smith has been a valued member of the Sebastian Inlet State Park team since Sept. 5, 2021, when he joined us as a Senior Clerk. From day one, Don brought a strong work ethic, a passion for the outdoors and a wealth of experience from both the public and private sectors.

Born and raised in Melbourne, Don developed a deep appreciation for Florida’s natural environment early on, spending much of his youth at the beach or in the woods. After graduating from Eau Gallie High School, Don served as a helicopter crew chief in the U.S. Army with assignments in North Carolina and Germany. His military background instilled in him a sense of discipline, leadership and commitment to service that he carries into his role at the park.

Following his time in the Army, Don returned to Melbourne, where he raised a family with his wife, Karen. As an active leader in Scouting, he helped guide and mentor youth while regularly camping with his family throughout Florida.

Professionally, Don brings a strong technical and operational background. He previously owned and operated a successful radio communications company that served schools across Central Florida and mining clients in South America. After merging that business with a defense contractor, he took on the role of Network Operations Manager, overseeing video surveillance systems for U.S. Air Force missile silos in four states. When the contract downsized during the COVID-19 pandemic, Don saw an opportunity to return to his roots, working in Florida’s natural spaces.

In addition to his professional contributions, Don and his wife continue to enjoy tent camping, kayaking and biking in Florida State Parks. His dedication to both service and stewardship makes him an integral part of our team and a wonderful ambassador for our park.
