Tony Clements, Park Manager
Welcome to Oscar Scherer State Park, we look forward to your visit with us. We are close to it all but feel a thousand miles away.
Fall is in the air along with many birds such as the Florida Scrub-Jay, bald eagles and many migratory birds. The weather is perfect for a hike on one of our 10 trails, yes 10 trails, we just opened up our newest trail. The Orange Trail connects our green and yellow trails, cutting the distance to Big Lake from 5 miles to 1.4 miles giving easier recreational access to the recently enhanced Big Lake. A few interesting features along this trail are: a 14ft span all natural wood bridge made from downed trees from hurricane Irma, the trail travels under an old railroad truss that was used by Ringling Circus to transport elephants and clowns and there’s a 20ft elevation change to access the bridge (that’s a lot for this neck of the woods).
Join us on the Sunday Scrub Walk at 8:30 a.m. or the guided kayak paddle Wednesdays at 9 a.m. Take a look at our program and event calendar to discover the great programs and events going on.
With all the great resource management work going in the park we had another successful breeding season for the Florida Scrub-Jays. 6 more fledglings this season the most in several years 2 years in a row. Our Big Lake restoration project is complete. Big Lake was a pit dug to build up the local highway. The improvement converted this borrow pit into a more natural lake providing great habitat and fishing opportunities. Part of this project included the creation of an upland island in the center of the lake that will encourage roosting for many wading birds. Take the new Orange trail for easier access to this lake.
Come check out the work we’ve been doing to help preserve and restore the little piece of paradise we call Oscar Scherer State Park or better yet get involved. If you enjoy hard work with satisfying results, volunteer for a day, a week, or more, you can participate in natural resource management, construction, programs, and special events at Oscar Scherer State Park. Give us a call if you are interested.
