Honoring Outstanding Volunteer Contributions at Koreshan State Park

In 2024, we celebrate the incredible dedication and impact of several individuals and groups who have gone above and beyond in service to Koreshan State Park. These individuals won awards at the state level and were honored by the Florida Park Service and Florida State Park Foundation.

Steve Kalb receives recognition for nearly 20 years of service and cultural resource interpretation. As our resident blacksmith, Steve has not only brought the historic Industrial Area to life through engaging demonstrations, but has also trained staff and volunteers in the art and science of blacksmithing—ensuring this unique skill continues to enrich our interpretive programs for years to come.

Lowe’s of Estero, led by Assistant Manager Michelle Latorella, is honored with the Corporate Team Award for their generous donations and hands-on volunteer efforts across multiple parks. From building picnic tables and trash enclosures to donating trees, mulch and materials for a new staff residence, their support has made a lasting difference in our park’s infrastructure and visitor experience.

On team of Maintenance Volunteers including Greg & Cathy Pauly, Martin Henderson, Mike Denardo, Joe Biondo, Ed Babin, Andy McClary and Terry Koch—is recognized for their two-year renovation of a former office building into a staff residence. Their skilled labor and use of donated materials saved the park tens of thousands of dollars, showcasing the power of teamwork and community spirit.

Finally, Marc Willer receives the Historical Resource Award for his meticulous restoration work on all eleven of Koreshan’s preserved historic buildings. Whether repairing porches, windows or recreating decorative elements, Marc’s craftsmanship and adherence to preservation standards ensure our historic structures remain intact for future generations.
