Renee Thompson, Secretary Specialist

Blackwater River State Park

Renee Thompson is a Northwest Florida native who comes from a Navy family and has spent most her life near Milton, Florida. Renee has a lasting passion for Blackwater River State Park.

She first camped in the park in 2009, falling in love with the natural communities and the namesake river. She has been hooked ever since.

After starting out tent camping and eventually moving up to an RV, she and her husband, Mike, decided to volunteer as camp hosts in 2013 so they could be in the park more often. During her time as a volunteer, she enjoyed getting to know the staff and campers, making many new friends. Campers began to know Renee and Mike by name and would often visit if they were hosting.

After retiring from her career in banking, Renee fully committed herself to the park she loves most when she became the secretary specialist. She loves greeting visitors at the ranger station and is often the very first impression visitors have of the park.

When Renee isn’t in the office managing administrative needs, she can be found relaxing by the river, enjoying a campfire with friends and family, or enjoying the company of her shelties at the campsite.

What Renee loves most about Blackwater River State Park is meeting new people, seeing old friends that she has met over the years camping, and working the variety of tasks that fall onto her desk in the office. Renee imagines the next chapter in her life will be volunteering in campgrounds all around the country with her husband.
