Ranger James Royster

Park Ranger, James Royster

Dagny Johnson Key Largo Hammock Botanical State Park

James Royster was born in Travers City, Michigan, but moved with his family to South Florida when he was only 6 years old. Although a “transplant,” he considers himself a true Floridian and has always had a love of the outdoors.

Through his life James had multiple careers in the business and corporate world but never felt fulfilled. When searching for another path, his wife asked him what he wanted to do as a child. He quickly replied, “Be a park ranger.”

James enjoys his role as a ranger because it allows him to interact with people and inform them about the always evolving yet constant natural environment. He sees his role as one of making sure park visitors have a safe, educational and enjoyable experience.

Much time and effort are spent keeping the park free of invasive plants and animals. This allows a better habitat for the native and unique birds, butterflies and reptiles attracted by the visual and aromatic environment produced by the park’s plant life.

The ability to be a member of a terrific team that services a wonderful customer base in the largest remaining natural habitat of the entire Keys chain is a true pleasure for James. He invites others to follow in his footsteps as a ranger and experience a new and fresh appreciation for our parks and other environmental areas. James likes to remind us of the saying, “Take only pictures. Leave only footprints.”
