Volunteer Spotlight, David Dennis and John Niemeyer
They call themselves “the camp host boys” and proudly carry that title as they cruise around the camping loops in their first ever volunteer position with Florida State Parks.
Volunteers John and David are retired Air Force and Navy veterans with years of experience in customer service, which is their No. 1 priority in everything they do as campground hosts. Since joining the Blackwater team, they have been friendly and helpful with greeting campers and assisting them with anything they need.
They are willing to apply their skills to whatever the park needs. When they are not raking the rocks smooth in campsites or refreshing the bathhouse, they offer to help the rangers with extra tasks. They have gotten to know the park’s atmosphere and keep a watchful eye. Since arriving, John and David have been integrated into the team and have shown a dedicated commitment to the park.
John and David have always enjoyed the outdoors. The fresh air, wildlife, natural beauty, camping and fishing are just some of their favorite things about the outdoors. For many years, they have called Pensacola home and now home is where their wheels carry them.
John and David chose Blackwater River State Park for its size, the rotating work schedule and the friendly staff. When they aren’t in their uniforms, they can be found enjoying the hiking trails, floating down the river or simply basking on the white sandy bars of the river.
For them, nothing could be better in retired life than being close the grandkids and sharing the park with family while making new friends with every camper.
