Celebrate the Memorial Day holiday at Highlands Hammock. With more rare and endemic species than any other Florida State Park; and, listed on the National Register of Historic Places, Highlands Hammock is known for preserving both wilderness and history. Visitors may experience both by planning a field trip which includes hiking the Loop Road nature trails and touring the Civilian Conservation Corps Museum. Wildlife which may be observed include families of deer with newborn fawns. Gopher tortoises may be spotted along the entrance drive and pileated woodpeckers flashing red and black may be glimpsed among throughout the Hammock. A visit to the CCC Museum will reveal the history of the Great Depression and introduce visitors to those "another day, another dollar" times of the "CCC boys" for whom working in the Corps became "a vacation from poverty." Join CCC Museum curator David Schmidt for a sweeping overview of CCC parks in all 48 states, their legacy in Alaska and Hawaii and discover why these parks are immediately recognizable as CCC parks due to their similarities in construction, design, engineering and materials. The parks vary greatly by geographic region and are well known for unique attractions such as historic battlefields, museums, or spectacular natural features. They all have significance and are embedded in our national history. Regardless of where you grew up, chances are your favorite park is a CCC park!
