San Felasco Hammock Preserve Volunteer Shelby with horse

Shelby Barton

San Felasco Hammock Preserve State Park

Shelby was born in the Tampa area, but when she was still a child her parents moved to Fort White just outside of Gainesville. She went from the city life to the country life pretty quickly. Shelby’s parents took her camping and hiking pretty often. Lucky for her, she enjoyed it.

Shelby has a passion for the outdoors and trees as well as horses, which sparked her initial interest in volunteering.

For the last few years, Shelby has been volunteering to care for San Felasco’s Florida cracker horses. As park manager Robert Dampman put it, “Her dedication to our herd has been nothing less than outstanding and her genuine care for each one, individually, is something that she should be proud of."

Shelby’s favorite events at the park are our invasive plant volunteer days for Earth Day and National Public Lands Day. She enjoys talking to and meeting all the different people that come to the events. She hopes to one day work for the park service and help host and organize similar events.
