Lake Kissimmee State Park
Volunteer Larry Duncanson - also known as Dunk - is hardworking and holds a wealth of knowledge and skills. Above all the other talents he is an awesome fisherman! After retiring Dunk and wife Lenore set out on the American dream of traveling the United States and visited Lake Kissimmee State Park for two weeks every year to fish the chain of lakes.
Upon one of their yearly visits, Dunk was approached by a park volunteer who told him about all the wonderful things he was helping the park do, and the great group of people he was working with. Just like the fish he catches, Dunk took the bait and began volunteering soon after.
His wealth of knowledge has not only saved the park money but he also has taught valuable skills to new rangers. The three-story observation tower is a great example of how his skills and knowledge help our park. The tower was closed to the public for two years due to deterioration. He supervised the entire project and staff. They were able to rebuild and repair the tower for visitors to use in less than a month.
When you visit Lake Kissimmee State Park you will notice some artistic elements that stand out such as the campground sign or cow hunter at the park’s entrance. Dunk made those. There is not a building or rangers skill set at our park he has not improved. He is truly a great asset to the Florida Park Service.
Dunks favorite thing while volunteering at Lake Kissimmee State Park is to share the fish he catches by hosting a potluck fish fry for all the park volunteers and staff. He also works closely with the park service specialist by helping with interpretive programming. The park is beyond grateful for his volunteer service.
