Joy Mitchell

Dunns Creek State Park

Joy Mitchell is the secretary and treasurer for the Friends of Dunns Creek State Park, the park's citizen support organization (CSO). She has an important role in managing the business part of the corporation. Her professional background in accounting, insurance, taxes and annual reporting has helped the CSO stay in compliance with agency guidelines, federal and government laws, and best practices related to nonprofits.

With her special skills set she recently completed the CSO’s profile in GuideStar gaining the Platinum Seal of Transparency, the highest level awarded. This is quite an accomplishment for any nonprofit. She recently was responsible for the friends receiving a grant from VisitFlorida, which will be used for the annual Earth Day event.

With her knowledge, experience and dedication, she has aided the park in growth as well as freeing other board members to focus on promoting the park.

Originally, Joy came to Dunns Creek because her curiosity got the better of her. She had heard about the shoreline along the creek that runs for 6 miles and after exploring her neighborhood park, Joy and her husband fell in love with the unspoiled, serene and natural beauty of Dunns Creek State Park.

For Joy, it is easy to contribute to her favorite park. She loves the natural resources of her home state of Florida and personally enjoys the variety of administrative aspects related to small business, in particular, nonprofit corporations. For her, it is a real pleasure to engage the public in the natural and cultural resources of the park.
