Volunteer Spotlight, Francois Labossiere

Francois Labossiere

Bahia Honda State Park

Francois travels from Quebec to the Florida Keys to volunteer every spring. Not only is this a journey between countries and across many miles, it is a transition from one language to another. Francois has made a great effort to master the English language and his improvement is audible every year. Francois communicates fluently with our French and English speaking guests, which proves very helpful with the number of international visitors we have at Bahia Honda.

Francois has worn many hats as a volunteer. He has been a late field volunteer patrolling the park in the evenings and a daytime camp host tending to the campgrounds and bathhouses. He has helped the maintenance mechanic with many park projects, helped update the cabins, and helped work through new cleaning procedures in our bathhouses.

One thing Francois was looking forward to this year was the 50th anniversary of Earth Day celebration at Bahia Honda. His goal this year was to show visitors how to repurpose crab trap line that is found along our shorelines. He built a frame out of PVC and a woodblock to make doormats from the rope. When the event was canceled, Francois didn't give up. He mastered the technique and made a video to post on the Friends of Bahia Honda Facebook page. He plans on teaching many people at next year's Earth Day event.

If you see a busy guy in the park who is always smiling, it's Francois! Merci beaucoup, Francois.
