Bill Ney

Silver Springs State Park

Bill Ney loves volunteering at the park so much he has logged over 1,100 hours since 2013. He saw an ad in the Villages newspaper asking for help when the park transitioned from Silver River to Silver Springs. He answered the call and has been coming at least once a week ever since. With a background in sales, Bill is very outgoing and loves chatting up visitors at the park’s headsprings. Whether he is inside the education center or walking around, he is full of great stories.

In 2017, the park’s aquarium exhibit received a larger tank and filter system. Every week, Bill diligently tests the water chemistry, cleans the filters, and changes the water so the bream, the bass, the gar, and the catfish can keep on swimming.

On the first Sunday of every month, Bill helps with the Florida Safari tram tour of the pine forests. For the first few years he helped drive the trams but he now gives the tours as well. He loves pointing out the gopher tortoise burrows, especially when one is at the entrance.

It’s due in large part to volunteers like Bill that Silver Springs can offer so many programs and events.
