Come on out to Okeechobee Battlefield Historic State Park and have a picnic under our picnic pavilion designed after a Seminole Chickee Hut (pronounced Cheek-ee).

The reserve has 14 miles of hiking and 17 miles of equestrian trails, through diverse habitats such as sand pine scrub, pine flatwoods, bayheads, oak hammocks and swamps.

The Waccasassa River meanders 29 miles, picking up fresh, spring water that contributes to vast salt marshes of the Gulf. The mix of fresh and salt water creates an incredibly nutrient-rich environment that supports a diversity of life.

Accessible only by water, this is a boater’s dream. There are multiple ways to get on the water and experience the 19,000 acres of tidal marshes and 20 miles of coastline that the preserve offers.

As the name implies, Cedar Key Scrub State Reserve protects one of Florida’s rarest and most unique natural communities: scrub. Scrub is found on deep white “sugar sand” ridges across Florida.

Diverse habitats provide opportunities to observe many bird species, from soaring eagles and swallow-tailed kites to rare sparrows and wrens.

A leisurely ride in the sandhills, between pine trees and through the sunny scrub provides a taste of some of the natural communities that make Florida so diverse and scenic.

This town’s history would be complete without discussing its namesake: cedar trees, and the booming lumber industry that helped put the town on the map.
