Join FOTBSP and Halifax River Audubon for a walk through a section of the park that is off the beaten path. This easy "back country" ramble will offer a great opportunity to explore an "under-birded" area on a trail that runs along the creek. The path is approximately 1.5 to 2 miles, round trip.
Time: 8:00am – 10:00am
Meet at: Paved Trail Trailhead on the Corner of Inglesa Ave. and North Beach Street (GPS 29.327650922126363, -81.07742990250965)
What to Bring: Sturdy, close-toed shoes (uneven terrain expected), insect repellent, water, snacks. Ticks inhabit this area, so you might consider long pants and socks. Don't forget your binoculars.
You have figured out how binoculars work. You have a good idea of where to look for the bird when you hear it. You can tell ducks from hawks from herons from finches. What's the next step? Come to this class led by experts from Halifax River Audubon. We will take a little deeper dive into birding. We will explore the seasonal changes in bird populations in Florida, concentrating on the birds that you will see throughout the winter. After a short classroom warm-up, we will take to the park searching for birds on their winter hiatus. In the field, we discuss apps and optics. We will discuss the finer points of identification. We will learn about the importance of habitat. And we will have a good time.
Previous attendance to Beginning Birding is not required.
Time: 9:00am – 11:00am
Meet at: Tomoka State Park Rec Hall, Across from the Tomoka Outpost.
What to Bring: Sturdy, close-toed shoes (uneven terrain expected), insect repellent, water, snacks. Ticks inhabit this area, so you might consider long pants and socks. Don't forget your binoculars.
Oleta River State Park will be hosting a Bird Watching Day. Join Ranger Finn on a nature walk to explore and identify native bird species in the park. Visitors are encouraged to bring their own binoculars and cameras to capture the park's avian residents in action.
Excitement is in the Air! The Friends of Tomoka Basin State Parks, in partnership with expert guide Joan Tague, invite you to a Beginner's Birding Class. Enjoy a one-hour indoor session in the Rec Hall, followed by an optional one-hour bird walk in the South Area. This workshop will include both classroom and outdoor opportunities to hone your skills. You will be introduced to tools that will help you to whittle down the possibilities and that will get you to the right id: "I know what that is!" The class is recommended for adults and older children accompanied by an adult. Topics Covered:
• Why should I want to know how to identify birds? (Find out what you are missing)
• The Basics of Bird Identification (Preparation and concentration)
• The importance of time and place
• The Power of Quiet Observation and Listening
• Binoculars and other optics (How to choose and how to use)
