Historic Site
Historic Site

Established on March 15, 1738, Fort Mose, became the first legally sanctioned free Black community in what is now the United States. Just two miles north of St. Augustine, this fortified settlement stood as both a sanctuary and the first line of defense for Spanish Florida.

Now in 2025, the newly reconstructed Fort Mose honors the bravery and resilience of the original community, telling a story of freedom, unity, and survival. We invite you to explore this powerful place and reflect on its enduring legacy.

Interpretive Exhibit

Explore the important yet relatively unknown story of Fort Mose, the first legally sanctioned free African settlement in what would become the United States. Learn about the residents of Mose, who were former slaves who emancipated themselves from plantations in the Carolinas and Georgia during British rule, and how they lived day-to-day life in the first stop of the Underground Railroad.

Watch the movie in the museum's classroom, browse interactive exhibits including archaeological artifacts and maps, and discuss the complex and compelling story with the ranger on duty.

Fort Mose's accessible museum features interactive audio, video and tactile stations as well as paintings, historic maps, archaeological artifacts and hands-on learning. Audio tours are available with assisted listening devices; several exhibits feature Braille font and a large-print museum guide is available.
