Winter Wonderland

Meteors and Fireflies over the Prairie

Shorter days don’t have to mean less fun! Check out these winter activities, available at a state park near you.

Wildlife Viewing

Winter is a prime time for wildlife viewing in Florida. Manatees flock to the various springs throughout the state; bald eagles make their nests at Pumpkin Hill Creek Preserve State Park, Three Rivers State Park and others; and butterflies migrate through the state on their way south for the winter.

Shelling

When winds and storms whip up the waves, they can also whip up seashells! This common coastal pastime is a peaceful way to enjoy a walk along the beach. Find out what shells to look out for and collect responsibly. Bring a bag to collect your treasures and another to collect trash.

Stargazing

If you decide to stick around after dark, you’ll get to enjoy another winter delight: the night sky! The remoteness of many state parks makes them ideal for looking at the stars without interference from other light sources and the dryness of the air in wintertime makes the skies clearer. These two factors combine to give you a stellar view. There are many parks throughout the state that offer great vistas of the night sky. Book a camping stay today!

First Day Hikes

Organized in state parks across the country, thousands of people participate in First Day Hikes on the first day of the year. Varying from short strolls to longer treks, these hikes offer a variety of ways for people to get outdoors and start the new year on the right foot!

We hope you get some time this winter to enjoy the parks in any of these ways or however you like.
