Karen Sunderland, Volunteer

Few embody the spirit of stewardship like Karen Sunderland. As a founding member and current president of the Friends of the Islamorada Area State Parks (FIASP), Karen has devoted over 30 years to preserving the Keys’ unique parks and heritage.

Formed in 1987, FIASP supports seven parks, including Lignumvitae Key Botanical State Park, Indian Key Historic State Park, Windley Key Fossil Reef State Park, San Pedro Underwater Archeological Preserve State Park, Long Key State Park, Curry Hammock State Park and the 100-mile Florida Keys Overseas Heritage Trail.

Karen’s passion shines through at community events, where she educates the public about these natural and cultural treasures. Her latest project?  Karen is working with a group of Friends members to republish a new edition of Charlotte’s Story by Charlotte Niedhaulk. This book offers a charming glimpse into 1930s island life and will be sold by the FIASP to raise funds for park initiatives.

In 2019, the Florida Park Service honored Karen for her remarkable 30 years of volunteer service and commitment to celebrating the Keys’ environmental and cultural legacy. Today, we honor Karen in this volunteers spotlight! Thank you, Karen, for being a true guardian of Florida’s state parks.
