Volunteer Spotlight, Joe Dombkowski

Joe’s favorite task is being involved in construction projects. He feels a reward returning to a park and seeing some of the projects he has been a part of still standing, even after multiple hurricanes. Joe is a dependable asset to the Florida state park system. He always shows up with an optimistic outlook and is always willing to jump in and help, no matter what the task. Whether it’s cleaning the beach or building a bench, we can always count on Joe to get the job done with a smile and a positive attitude.

Joe served four years in the army and is a proud Vietnam-era veteran. Originally from Illinois, he was the treasurer of a motorcycle veterans’ group that supported veteran causes. He is also a retired registered nurse with about 38 years of experience. Joe has always liked camping and nature and thought being a resident volunteer would be a good continuation of that lifestyle, while giving back to the parks he has loved. His first volunteer job was at Koreshan State Park after his retirement in January of 2018. In Florida, he has volunteered at Koreshan State Park, Lovers Key State Park and Florida Caverns State Park. He has also volunteered at Brown County State Park and Brown County Music Center in Indiana, as well as Richard Bong State Recreation Area near Burlington, Wisconsin. Joe enjoys talking with park visitors and being an ambassador for the parks he’s volunteered at. He currently has over 3000 hours just with Florida State Parks and has loved every minute of his service.
