Bill and Anita Johnson

William H. “Bill” and Anita Johnson

Volunteer Team of 2 Award for Visitor Services

William H. “Bill” and Anita Johnson began volunteering in October 2015 at John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park. From the beginning, they have been friendly, hard-working, go-above-and-beyond volunteers.

Bill and Anita perform the campground host duties of cleaning restrooms and campsites, assisting campers and interpreting park information in a way that makes them an excellent role model for others. They are good judges of situations and people and can respond thoughtfully and appropriately so that visitors are pleased and the park’s resources are protected, appreciated and enjoyed.

Bill and Anita also handle repairs and improvements to park facilities. They work very hard at their tasks and don’t stop until the work is complete. They see things that need to be done in the park and just do them. Both Bill and Anita have taken classes offered by biologist Janice Duquesnel in plant ID training, herbicide training and exotic plant ID training.

They came to the team with a willingness to learn resource management and with no fear of the hard labor that it entails. After being given a list of projects, they work independently to complete them.

Together, they have volunteered more than 3,000 hours.
