Staff Spotlight, Tay Smith

A woman wearing protective fire safety equipment and reflective aviator sunglasses.

As an environmental specialist at Charlotte Harbor Preserve State Park, Tay works closely within resource management aspects of the park. This includes prescribed fire, hydrologic restoration, habitat restoration and invasive plant removal. You can most often catch her in the woods working on projects like fireline improvements, habitat surveys and wildlife surveys.

Of all her responsibilities at the park, Tay’s primary responsibility is the park’s prescribed fire program. As a Certified Prescribed Burner, Tay has the knowledge from years of experience to implement good burn practices that benefit the state, our neighbors, the environment and the wildlife that depend on these natural ecosystems.

Tay uses a particular set of skills to apply all the positive effects of prescribed fire on the park’s natural communities (reduce wildfire danger, increase food for animals and restoration of imperiled species habitat). Tay works with an amazing team of professional firefighters from this park and at other parks throughout the state. These professionals have burned more than 1 million acres to benefit wildlife and to protect lives and property from dangerous, uncontrolled wildfires.
