Patrick Hedger fell in love with Cape San Blas while vacationing in the area with his wife Donna. After many years of escaping to Cape San Blas from Metro Atlanta, the two decided to make Port St. Joe their home. Being in the funeral service profession for many years, Patrick was looking to work in a front facing way and serve his new community. In November of 2024, Patrick found his calling as a Park Ranger at William J. “Billy Joe” Rish Recreation Area.
As a Park Ranger, Patrick does it all. From welcoming guests in the Visitor Center, ensuring the park is clean and safe or cleaning a park cabin no two days are alike for Patrick. He says his favorite part of being a Park Ranger is the fact that he “get’s to work in his favorite place doing something that changes daily.”
William J. Rish Recreation Area holds a special place in Patrick’s heart. Patrick’s sister had Cerebral Palsy as a child, so serving the disabled community is especially meaningful to him. “Giving people that wouldn’t normally have the ability to get out on the beach” is his favorite part of working at Rish.
Even on his days off duty, Patrick enjoys visiting the beautiful beach at Rish Park with his family. Patrick recommends visitors come enjoy all Rish Park has to offer. Take a stroll on the boardwalk, grab a mobility device from the Visitor Center, swim in the pool or sit on the beach. There is something for everyone.
