Park ranger and former Girl Scout, Shannon Kelly, who works at Honeymoon Island State Park in Dunedin, Florida

What inspired you to work in the parks and recreation field?

Being outdoors and being social are two big things in my life. Being a park ranger has enabled me to do both as a career. I want to make a difference for future generations. The park service can do that.

Describe your job in the Florida Park Service. What are the favorite parts of your job?

I am a park ranger. I love leading interpretive programs. Educating the youth about conservation and biology while enjoying the outdoors is what really satisfies me as a ranger.

How did your participation in Girl Scouts prepare you for your career?

I think the Girl Scouts prepared me because I learned that it is okay to get out of my comfort zone. Growth is big in Girl Scouts, and growth is also big in the park service.

What advice would you offer to young women who want to pursue a career in parks and recreation?

Know that you are capable of everything. You are strong enough. You are smart enough. You can learn to do maintenance on vehicles. You can learn fix a toilet. You can provide first aid. You can save someone's life. You are capable.
