Park services specialist and former Girl Scout, Elena Muratori, works at John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park in Key Largo, Florida.
What inspired you to work in the parks and recreation field?
My love of both people and nature! I knew that interacting and sharing with others what I appreciated was important. Studying biology and ecology and protecting the environment was important, too. From visiting Florida's State Parks as a young adult, I wanted to be a part of their legacy.
Describe your job in the Florida Park Service. What are the favorite parts of your job?
Working with my co-workers and coordinating volunteers, assisting and educating park visitors, and being able to enjoy the natural beauty of the park's environmental resources are the best! I get to clean bathrooms (yes, I really like this) and put on an annual lecture series and Native Plant Day event.
How did your participation in Girl Scouts prepare you for your career?
Be prepared, the Girl Scout motto, was particularly helpful for all the things that can happen each day. All the projects we did, helping others, gave a sense of service to others. Leaving a place better than we found it. Reverence for nature and camp-outs help with campfire programs.
What advice would you offer to young women who want to pursue a career in parks and recreation?
Follow your star and do what you love! Take initiative, but follow chain of command. Ask advice of experienced co-workers, but be sure to share your novel ideas to be used. Work independently, but also cooperatively with others. Do the required daily tasks; then explore new possibilities. Work hard! Have fun!
