District biologist and former Girl Scout, Alice Bard, works in the central district office in Orlando, Florida.

What inspired you to work in the parks and recreation field?

I've always been interested in science, and biodiversity and conservation really captured my interest. Our public lands in Florida have so much biodiversity. Working in the parks and recreation field offers an incredible opportunity to be directly involved in making a difference, both short-term and long-term-in our future.

Describe your job in the Florida Park Service. What are the favorite parts of your job?

I'm a district biologist so I get to work outside a lot in our natural areas. Every day is different. I may be conducting a prescribed burn or monitoring endangered species or helping with shoreline restoration efforts. Any time I can do something to help preserve biodiversity, I'm up for it.

How did your participation in Girl Scouts prepare you for your career?

The Girl Scout Law-the aspects of being honest and fair, courageous and strong, being responsible in what we say and do, and using resources wisely, plus earning relevant merit badges-helped put me on the path to where I am now.

What advice would you offer to young women who want to pursue a career in parks and recreation?

Find what sparks your interest and learn everything you can about it. Find mentors and internships and job shadowing opportunities. Believe in yourself as a leader. Always have an open mind and look for new experiences.
