2021 Citizen Support Organization of the Year for Resource-Based Recreation
The Friends of Camp Helen has gone above and beyond the call of duty to ensure that park staff are supported, the needs of the park are met, and a strong connection to the community is maintained.
In 2020 and 2021, the Friends of Camp Helen was devoted to maintaining an impactful park experience with a virtual audience. The group converted its annual Americana Concert Series to a totally online format. Professional videographers and sound engineers produced the videos and uploaded them to YouTube. This more shareable format allowed the park to reach an even broader audience. Each concert was viewed by hundreds of people, much more than could be held in the lodge where the concert normally takes place.
Every subsequent event was modified to accommodate staff and visitors. Friends of Camp Helen has brought many welcome additions to the park such as movie nights, park specific programming and a kayak rental program.
The kayak rentals have been so successful that their scale has been increased, which has allowed even more visitors to explore the serenity of Lake Powell.
