Devin Whitney, Park Manager
Welcome to Hontoon Island State Park, a true island located on the St. Johns River, southwest of DeLand. It is surrounded by waterways with the St. Johns River to the north and east, the Hontoon Dead River to the west and Snake Creek to the south.
Recreational activities include hiking, biking, camping, paddling, fishing, picnicking and wildlife viewing. We have 8 miles of trails, with 6 miles that are bike friendly and the full 8 miles available for hiking/walking. Be prepared with proper clothing and footwear, because the trails may be wet and muddy.
The entire area of Hontoon Island is contained within the St. Johns River Valley physiographic subzone, with elevations ranging from 15 feet above mean sea level to less than 5 feet above mean sea level.
A variety of wildlife can be seen at the park, including the Florida black bear, white-tailed deer, wild turkeys, river otters, bobcats, gopher tortoises, snakes, turtles, wading birds, songbirds, birds of prey and more! Please stay on the designated trails and do not feed or approach the animals. Bring binoculars and take photographs to create lasting memories.
Popular interpretive programs include guided kayak adventures, ranger-led hikes, environmentally responsible camping, naturalist skills development and more! We also encourage people to participate in the Junior Ranger Program. Additionally, the visitor center has excellent displays and information on the park’s history, indigenous people, wildlife and more.
The Real Florida has something to offer everyone and we hope you enjoy your experience at Hontoon Island State Park.
