Manager's Message

Jeremy Sweeney, Park Manager
Tucked within the Greater Everglades Ecosystem lies a place unlike any other: Fakahatchee Strand Preserve State Park. It's not just a park, but a living breathing example of the perfect balance between natural resource preservation and unmatched visitor experience opportunities. For a unique look at some of the most pristine land lost in time, visit the main entrance off Janes Memorial Scenic Drive, where every turn invites you to experience “Old Florida” at its finest. Come for a day hike or take a drive down the old dirt road. Just be sure to keep your eyes peeled for panthers, otters, wading birds and other curious creatures… you might just find the wildlife watching you. The visitors center will open in October and offer a brief history of the park along with an inside look into wildlife, plants and resource management methods.
Bringing the kids? Ask us about our Jr. Ranger program, where kids can learn about becoming the future generation of conservation heroes. Need a quick glimpse of the everglades? Make a pit stop at The Big Bend Boardwalk located off U.S. 41. The board walk offers a great stop for those that want to get a look into the everglades from the comfort of a beautiful boardwalk, no hiking boots required. It’s the perfect location for birdwatching, photo ops and maybe even catching a live ranger-led program in action! Contact the park office for upcoming programs at (239) 961-1925. We are home to flora and fauna that's found nowhere else on Earth, located on a strand that filters water naturally and feeds the very essence of the Gulf Coast’s estuaries.
This place isn’t just wild, it’s essential.
Want to go beyond the boardwalk? Come meet the Friends of Fakahatchee. They are our dedicated nonprofit Citizen Support Organization. They’re the heartbeat of park advocacy, helping with events, education, fundraising and spreading the word about this Florida treasure. They're always welcoming new members. Follow them on Facebook or visit their website to get involved.
From our park family to yours, we can’t wait to welcome you into the magic of Fakahatchee Strand Preserve State Park. Where nature isn’t just preserved, it thrives.
