Tucked beneath the oaks and a short five-minute drive from I-295 and Heckscher Drive, Yellow Bluff Fort preserves an important piece of Jacksonville’s Civil War history. It’s the perfect place to enjoy your picnic lunch break in the shade of the grand oak trees.

Afterwards, stroll through the contours of this T-shaped earthwork fort along the half-mile nature trail and imagine the 250 troops encamped here in simple fabric tents. You can almost hear the crackling of the campfire and murmur of camaraderie on a cool autumn night. Built in 1862, this site was used by both Confederate, and then Union, troops to defend their post on the St. Johns River. Keep an eye out for wildlife like red foxes and pileated woodpeckers!

We hope that you and your family can take advantage of the restorative nature that our historic park offers. Whether it’s picnicking, walking or nature watching, we’re happy to see you here.
