Volunteer Beach Cleanup Day

Dr. Julian G. Bruce St. George Island State Park

St. George Island was just east of where Hurricane Michael came ashore. Dr. Julian G. Bruce St. George Island State Park, located on the east side of the island, suffered major damage from the storm. Winds and strong storm surge damaged structures and buried roads under sand. Tall dunes bordering the drive into the park absorbed much of the force of the hurricane, scattering sand and plants over the island. Debris was scattered throughout the park along the 9 miles of shoreline.

To expedite recovery efforts, a volunteer beach cleanup day was held to assist park staff remove debris left on shore by Hurricane Michael. Trash, heavy wood and metal construction materials posed safety issues to both park visitors and park wildlife. With the help of 90 park supporters, volunteers spent the day collecting, bagging and disposing of more than 10 dump truck loads of debris. Recyclable materials were also separated and recycled thanks to the dedicated group of volunteers.
