The Air Potato Rodeo is an annual park beautification day and resource management project held to help control the air potato vine (Dioscorea bulbifera) that has been widespread at Ravine Gardens.  Controlling this pest plant is crucial in maintaining the historic beauty of the formal gardens in the park. Participants will assist park staff and volunteers in the collection of the potato-like tubers in efforts to control the sprouting and spread of the vine.

YOU HAVE MADE A DIFFERENCE! Previous events and volunteer work have been so successful that the number of tubers is now limited. To keep this annual event going we had to move it later in the growing season. Additionally, we will use this day to attack other invasive plants in the park.

All ages are invited to participate. Groups and scout troops are welcome and encouraged! At the end of the event, prizes will be awarded for various categories, such as largest potato found.

The first 100 volunteers who register on Eventbrite by 5/3/2019 will be guaranteed a free custom souvenir when they check-in onsite for the event. A pizza lunch will be provided for all participants after the event sponsored by the Friends of Ravine Gardens.

  • Trash bags and tools will be provided.
  • Participants should bring their own gardening gloves, if possible.
  • Wear long sleeves and pants. Closed-toed shoes are required.
  • Participants should bring a reusable water bottle, bug spray and sunscreen.

The event will be cancelled if there is inclement weather, so make sure to register with a valid email and phone number. Updates can also be found on our Facebook page.
