Stephen Foster Folk Culture Center State Park will host the 69th Annual Jeanie & Stephen Auditions. The popular songs of Stephen Foster and the classical and operatic compositions of American music will be highlighted at the Stephen Foster Museum. The festivities will begin Friday evening with the Golden Slipper Gala in Lake City, FL. Visit the Florida Federation of Music Clubs website for information about Friday evening.
On Saturday morning at 10 a.m. in the Stephen Foster Museum the contestants will audition for the title of "Jeanie" and "Stephen" in a public concert before a panel of judges. Competitors will wear 1854-style formal attire, keeping with the theme of the event, which is named for a song Stephen Foster wrote for his wife, "Jeanie, with the Light Brown Hair."
This scholarship event is a tribute to Foster, a 19th century composer who wrote some of America's best-known songs, including, "Oh! Susanna" and "Beautiful Dreamer." Foster also wrote "Old Folks at Home," which was adopted as the official Florida state song in 1935. The event attracts contestants from throughout the state of Florida and is sponsored by the Florida Federation of Music Clubs and the Stephen Foster Citizen Support Organization. Competitors must sing one song composed by Stephen Foster, and a song of their choice written by American composers. The Jeanie and Stephen winners and 2 runners-up receive scholarships to further their vocal studies. More information about the Florida Federation of Music and the competition rules can be found on their website.
