Novice and experienced birders are invited to take a guided bird walk on Pepper Cereek Trail. Leaders from Citrus County Audubon will lead the walk. Bring binoculars and a field guide if you have them. This leisurely-paced walk is on a fully accessible (paved) trail that winds through a hydric hammock along Pepper Creek. On April 28th, the Department of Environmental Protection’s Hillsborough River State Park will be participating in the Great American Cleanup event. The event’s goal is to foster unity and strengthen community bonds through beautification and improvement efforts across Hillsborough County. Any individual, family, school, group, place of worship, business or government entity can participate. For more than twenty years, this locally activated community improvement program brings the power of volunteers and sponsors together to inspire change and build sustainable, vibrant communities.

Volunteers are needed to assist in the cleanup of debris from the river banks and our trails, as well as the removal of exotic plant species.

Work clothes and shoes are required. Water, sunscreen and bug spray are suggested.

The Friends of Dunns Creek State Park are excited to host their Kayaking 101 program! This program is designed for anyone interested in kayaking, particularly beginners. An instructor certified by the American Canoe Association will teach you the basics of kayaking during this three hour session. You will learn kayak safety, boarding kayaks, paddling strokes, and basic paddling maneuvers.

The training is limited to 6 participants and is $25 per person. Kayak, paddle, and Personal Flotation Device (PFD) rentals are included in the training fee. No children under 14 years of age please. Children 14-17 are able to participate ONLY with a registered parent/guardian accompanying them. Kayaking is a water sport so expect to get wet and dress accordingly. There are no refunds available for the training, unless another participant can fill the spot.

Nature Hike - EVERY Saturday at 10:00 a.m. Join a park naturalist for a walk on the Nature Trails of Koreshan State Historic Site. Learn some park history, history of the Estero River and find out about plants and critters that we meet along the way. Walk will begin at the Koreshan State Historic Site picnic area near the kayak launch. Note: Reservations requested. Come and discover what life was like at the turn of the century in the Florida "piney woods." The cracker homestead is a replica of a 19th century pioneer settlement. This collection of buildings represents a small "Cracker'' settlement dating to the 1890s. A typical homestead of the time would have included a cabin and outbuildings such as a barn, pantry, smokehouse, and outhouse. Schoolhouses, churches, and blacksmith shops would have been found in settlements that homesteaders visited to attend social gatherings and barter for supplies. During the tour, these buildings will be open and unlocked and on most tours the blacksmith's forge will be fired up. Meet at the Cracker Village across from the Silver River museum.

Join Topsail Hill Preserve State Park for our annual Earth Day Festival on April 28, 2018 from 10:00a.m. - 2:00p.m. Celebrate the earth and Earth Day with the park and different environmental organizations and agencies. There will be nature activities, games, face painting and booths as well as music and fun.  An exciting part of the event is the participation in the #Trees4Earth campaign. With the 50th anniversary of Earth Day fast approaching in 2020, #Trees4Earth campaign was launched in 2016, with a goal to plant 7.8 billion trees worldwide by 2020—one for every person projected to be on Earth. The park and event attendees will be planting trees on park property as part of this campaign.  There will be tram rides to the beach and bikes, canoes, kayaks and paddleboards will also be available for rent.  Park admission is free during the event.
