Dear Civil War Enthusiast,

We invite you to participate in Living History at Fort Zachary Taylor Historic State Park on the third weekend of each month.  These events portray the time period of 1861-1862 at a Federal fortress. First person interpretation, weapons demonstrations and camp life are featured from 10am-2pm each day. Union and Confederate soldiers, townspeople, craftspeople, and performers, are all part of the re-enactments, which focus on educating the public by sharing the history of Fort Taylor and life during the Civil War.

Learning about and purchasing native plants can be a daunting task, but it just got easier! The Coccoloba Chapter of the Florida Native Plant Society volunteers will be selling native plants at the Koreshan State Historic Site Farmers Market Sundays, 8:00am - 1 pm.  Experts will be on hand to help answer your questions and teach you about the wonderful benefits of adding native plants to your landscaping. In partnership with the Marion County Animal Services, Silver Springs State Park presents an opportunity to make a difference in the life of a shelter dog. Every 4th Sunday, join volunteers and park staff as we walk a pack of well-behaved dogs through the park's gardens and trails. This program gives the animals exercise as well as a chance to socialize with other dogs and other people. All of the dogs are available for long-term adoption but you can also "adopt" a dog for the morning and take it for a walk with the group. For only a small amount of time you can make a huge difference in the life of a shelter animal. Hikers and walkers are welcome to join the group even if they do not want to hold a leash. Please note, only visitors 16 years or older may walk a shelter dog.

Park volunteer Elizabeth De Monte invites you to learn some fun and interesting facts about the Winter Solstice which is coming December 21, 2017. She will present two programs on Sunday, December 17, 2017 at 11:00 am and at 2:00 pm (the Sunday before the Winter Solstice). The programs will be presented in the Florida Room of the park's Visitor Center and main entrance located on US 19. De Monte says, the program will explain the Winter Solstice, Wintering of Animals and Winter Myths. Ancient people didn't know about Earth's orbit, but they still observed the solstice by noting what was happening in the skies overhead. Come and find out about the relationship of the earth and the sun. Find out how animals prepare for winter in a variety of ways. Winter myths abound in geography books, travel brochures, and tales of Santa's reindeer. Many of these will be discussed. Come and enjoy some new facts about our wonderful Earth and its creatures.
