Guided Bird Walk @ Fort Mose Historic State Park

Join Master Naturalist, Susan Killeen, for a guided birdwalk through the grounds of Fort Mose Historic State Park. The park is located along the Atlantic Flyway. It offers several natural communities, including an estuarine tidal marsh and a maritime hammock, that draw a wide variety of birds.  "Rookery Island" is home to many nesting species including several heron and egret varieties.

Florida Department of Environmental Protection’s Ochlockonee River State Park invites you to attend the 10th annual Stone Age and Primitive Arts Festival! The festival features artists and demonstrators from all over the country.

  • Learn from experts how to make your own arrowheads, spear points and stone tools with the ancient art of flintknapping

  • Participate in an atlatl throwing or primitive archery contest

  • Watch as instructors reveal the secrets behind primitive fire making techniques like the bow drill, hand drill, and the fire saw

As you roam down the short trail to the Cow Camp, you will travel back in time to 1876. At the end of the trail, you will find a Florida Cow Hunter in a frontier camp along the route of a cattle drive. He will be cooking, making coffee, tending to the cattle or just resting up until the next roundup or cattle drive. The Cow Hunter will be very happy to share stories about what his life is like and the challenges he faces.

Offsite Cow Camps are available for groups of 15 or more, schools, community organizations, special events, etc. Call the Ranger Station for more information.

Eagle Viewing @ Oscar Scherer State Park

This weekly program is offered during bald eagle nesting season. Two nests are located in the park but the easiest to access is on the Green Trail. Once nest construction has begun, part of the trails are roped off per federal law. To view the eagles from a safe distance, a Volunteer will be manning a viewing station. A high-powered spotting scope to view the nest will be provided. The 20-minute walk to the eagle viewing station on the Green Trail from the Nature Center or campground is self-guided and trail maps can be obtained at the Ranger Station and Nature Center.

Marjorie's Land of Hot Biscuits @ Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings Historic State Park

Park entry fee is $3.00 per car plus $3.00 per adult, $2.00 per child (6-12 years) for the historic house tour.  Cash or check only. House tour times which will include this demonstration are 10AM, 11AM, and 1PM, only, followed by a program about biscuits, and a tasting of the recipes prepared at 2:30PM.

Rawlings devoted an entire chapter in Cross Creek Cookery, and an entire chapter, "Our Daily Bread," in Cross Creek to hot breads, exploring how the south came to be called the "land of hot biscuits," and attributing any southern laid-back attitude to "the sense of well-being that follows the heart-and-body-warming consumption of breads fresh from the oven."

This demonstration cooking program will be dedicated to making and serving the biscuit and roll recipes she published.

Come join us at St. George Island State Park for a two-hour educational walking tour to learn shorebirding basics.  Coastal habitat supports a diverse abundance of shorebirds and seabirds that rely on our Gulf beaches for their survival.  The focus will be on beach nesting birds and Audubon Florida's volunteer Bird Stewardship program during the spring and summer.  We hope to observe both migratory and wintering shorebirds including: Snowy Plovers, American Oystercatchers, Willets, Terns, Herons and more!

Swing your partner, do-si-do, and promenade down to The Barnacle for an outdoor contra dance held under a covered pavilion by Biscayne Bay! These fun and friendly group dances are open to everyone and include a caller and a live acoustic band. The gates open at 6:00 p.m. Pre-dance instruction begins at 6:30, and dancing starts at 7:00 p.m. Picnics are welcome and snacks to share are encouraged.
