Have you ever wondered why Florida State Parks intentionally burn their park wildlands? Join a park ranger who participates in prescribed burning on a hike through a burn zone. Learn about who does the burning (and what training they receive), what planning goes into performing a prescribed fire, when is the best time of year to conduct prescribed burns, where is fire useful, why fire is important, and how a prescribed fire is planned, conducted, and reviewed.
Participants will be shown multiple ecosystems within a single burn zone, as well as an interface area where residences and park property meet, and discussions about how prescribed fire benefits not only the park, but the neighboring properties. Special consideration is taken when burning in what's called Wildland Urban Interfaces. These techniques will also be discussed.
The hike is planned for fairly level ground, under a mile of walking, along a dirt service road. Temperatures and weather conditions can vary at this time of year so dress appropriate for the forecast of that day.
Participants will be meeting at the Ponce de Leon Springs parking area at 9:00 am. From there participants will travel by vehicle to the site of the hike.
